Bing Adds Image Search Filters for Suggested & Disambiguation Queries

Bing is testing a new image search filter which adds additional images to the image search results for suggested refinements to the query, similar to disambiguation searches where search engines will offer suggestions for things that are named the same but mean two different things – such as we see with Apple the company and apple the fruit.

First, here is what it looks like:

You can see there are some image result spots taken up with a montage of smaller images below a query refinement suggestion.  So for the query “caravan” it is also suggesting “Gypsy caravan”, “camel caravan” and “Cessna caravan”.  As you can see, they aren’t queries directly related to the main image results, but more a “did you mean” type of suggestion.

When you click one of the results, it then takes you to an image search result page for that particular query.

The “Camel caravan” suggestion is still there, along with a new one, “Dodge Caravan.”

Bing is also still including the search refinements at the top as well, that don’t seem to include disambiguation types of suggestions when the query is narrowed already, but it does for the more generic single keyword search.
