Google Adds Local Restaurant Search Suggestion to Top of Search Results

Google has added a new alert to their search results, suggesting that people use Google search to find local restaurants, going so far as suggesting a search query to do so.  And most mysteriously, it shows up for completely unrelated – and non-local – queries.

Here is what it looks like:

As you can see, the search query had nothing to do with a local related search, but Google showed the suggestion.

The suggestion wasn’t clickable at all, so you weren’t able to click on it and go to a query for “restaurants nearby”, you would still need to do it.  It is also interesting that Google decided to do this late at night – it might have had a better reception if they had used the prompt before or dinnertime.
