Google is planning to shut down their engineering offices in Russia by the end of the year, due to restrictive new data laws that come into effect in the new year.

Earlier this year, Russia passed a variety of Internet laws, including some that governed the storage of data by Internet companies. Any company that retained personal data on Russian citizens were required to store that data within the country. While Russia said it was to protect data, others were very concerned about privacy regarding this data.

According to Fortune, Google issued a statement saying “We are deeply committed to our Russian users and customers and we have a dedicated team in Russia working to support them.” It is believed they will still keep a group of employees in areas such as sales, user support and marketing.

The move is not very surprising considering other companies, including Adobe and CNN, have closed their offices in Russia due to the change in laws.
