Google Launches New Rich Cards in Search Results

Google has announced the addition of rich cards in the mobile search results.  Rich cards are similar to rich snippets, but in an expanded format in a carousel.

Google is initially showing these new rich cards for recipes and movies in the mobile search results.

There is also a new related rich cards section in Google Search Console with more details.  You access it through the left sidebar under “Search Appearance”.

If you have markup on your pages for recipes or movies, Google will give you more detail on the structured data for the cards, otherwise it will say structured data not found.

Casey Markee noticed the information for recipes showing up yesterday afternoon and shared the following screenshots with us.

Google will highlight the issues it sees with rich snippets.  Missing an image rates the severity as critial, but it is unknown if this will prevent a result from being in the rich card carousel, but because carousels are so visual, I could definitely see this particular error resulting in the page not showing in rich cards.

Other errors are non-critical including things like author, cook time, description and calories.

Google has also added a new gallery showing off this addition, as well as other special types of search results that webmasters can mark up.

And best of all, reporting for rich cards will be added to Google Search Console.

A new “Rich results” filter in Search Analytics (currently in a closed beta) will help you track how your rich cards and rich snippets are doing in search: you’ll be able to drill down and see clicks and impressions for both.

This is now live in Google Search Console and the search results.
