Google To Remove AMP Bars When Scrolling & Easier Canonical Sharing

When viewing an article on AMP, Google will add an additional bar at the top of the AMP page – this bar is used so that a searcher can see the site they are on, as the URL in the top URL field will show the AMP URL, which is currently a google.com/amp/ URL.

This bar will soon be a thing of the past, at least when scrolling.  Google has confirmed that this bar will vanish as someone scrolls down the page.

Additionally, the top bar scrolls away on Android and the Google Search App for iOS devices and it will soon on iOS Chrome and Safari too. The team is currently hard at work to make this happen.

This is good news for a couple reasons.  First, it will show the true domain URL when someone first lands on the page.  But since every bit of screen real estate is important on a mobile device, site owners will get that bar space back as the searcher starts to scroll.

Google has added it to Android and the Google Search App for iOS and it will be coming soon for iOS Chrome and Safari.

Google had already confirmed on Twitter that they are going to make it easier to share the canonical URLs, so this just reiterates that this is coming.  But many site owners have cited this as a major reason for not testing out AMP.

The Search team is working on creating a direct path from AMP pages on Google Search to the canonical URL as specified by the publisher (usually the non-AMP original URL). Sharing will also use the canonical URL where technically possible.
