A reminder that when you move your site to HTTPS, don’t forget that you need to include your disavow file in the move.

The question came up on Twitter and Gary Illyes confirmed that webmasters will need to transfer over any disavow files to the new HTTPS site in Google Search Console.

This was actually something John Mueller confirmed last year, when many people began changing over from HTTP to HTTPS thanks to the ranking boost, and something I have recommended since then.  But when people make their laundry list of steps of things to do when switching, it is easy to see how it might be overlooked.

To make the change, simply download the live file from the HTTP site in Google Search Console to ensure you are using the most up-to-date file, then re-upload it to the HTTPS site.

This should be the same file as is currently on the HTTP version of the site, although going forward, you would only need to keep the HTTPS version updated, you do not need to continue updating them both, although some do that as well, as a “just in case” measure.
