Facebook Adds Floating Video Feature So Users Can Scroll Through Posts

Facebook is trying a new tactic to increase video views on their platform.  They have added a new button that allows users to click a button which will pop out the video and anchor it on the bottom of the page in a floating style, allowing users to watch the video while also scrolling through more posts on the page.

And here is how it appears once you’ve popped it out.

As you continue to scroll down the page, the video will float on the page, anchored to the bottom left position.

If you click on another video while the anchored video at the bottom is playing, it will pause the bottom video and start playing the one you’ve just clicked play on.   If you click to pop the new video out, it will replace the previous one at the bottom.

It will be interesting to see if users discover this new feature for themselves, or if Facebook will be promoting it in some way.  The fact that people can continue to read posts while multitasking and watching the latest cat video is a definitely plus.

Facebook has been trying to increase their video views, although they have also taken recent criticism for the fact they charge advertisers for sponsored videos the moment they begin playing.

Of course, adding a new floating video feature means people will spend more time reading posts, including viewing sponsored posts that advertisers pay for.
