Google Adds Snippets to Movie Review Knowledge Cards

Google recently made a change to include movie review scores in their knowledge cards at the top of the search results.  They have now expanded those cards to include not only the ratings but also quotes from the reviews themselves.

You can then click to expand and see more critic reviews.

Here is another one, and this example is huge by comparison.

This one shows a total of ten reviews, plus the three ratings at the top, for a total of thirteen different links to review sources.  The Divergent example has links to seven different reviews.

The maximum Google seems to ever show is 10 snippets plus three ratings.  Here is another example for a movie still in theaters.

One nice feature of this is that it gives searchers a taste of what each review is.  It also highlights more movie review sources, ones that might not necessarily show up in the first page of the search results, and includes sources that some might not think to look at for reviews.

However, it seems that this new style is only showing up for movies that have been released in the past couple of years.  For example, these two older movies only show the ratings and the sources, but does not include snippets from other reviews.

Here is how it appears in the mobile search results.

When you expand it though, it does not show movie review snippets unfortunately.

This makes Google’s reviews much more useful from their former format with the percentage and accompanying stars.  Here is how they looked previously:

It is nice to see these reviews evolving to something much more useful than how they originally appeared.

This change compliments movie related knowledge graphs showing reviews scores in the regular movie knowledge graphs.

Added: The Google Developer Blog posted schema.org implementation for marking up reviews.
