Facebook Testing Private Sharing App Codenamed Moments

Facebook has taken a lot of flack over privacy and a new app seems to be catering to those looking to share on Facebook but in a more private way.  It allows Facebook users to create groups of people and share to those groups instead of the more generic settings currently used such as “Friends”or “Public” (although you can drill down further to include and exclude people).

The new app, codenamed Moments, is being tested by some Facebook employees.

Techcrunch spoke with one person who has seen the app in action.

Our source who’s seen Moments likened it to the mobile app Cluster, which lets people create safe “spaces” for sharing content with small groups of people like family, best friends, high school buddies, or co-workers. Moments will similarly let people share to different subsets of their total friend list using a more visual design. This should be more comfortable for people than the tiny text-based privacy selector on their News Feed composer which relies on little-used Friend Lists.

This app would make it easier for people to post on sensitive topics, such as politics or religion, but only sharing them with like-minded friends so as not to offend those friends who might not share the same views.

It is unknown if this test will eventually make to non-employee testing or a full launch, as Facebook tends to regularly test features that are never released to the general public.
