Is Yahoo Switching Back to Yahoo Local Reviews From Yelp?

yahoo local yahoo reviews headerIs Yahoo switching back to their own Yahoo Local reviews, a year and a half after making the controversial switch from Yahoo reviews to Yelp’s reviews?  It is looking as though they are at least toying with the possibility, as Yahoo reviews have replaced Yelp for some businesse.

Mike Blumenthal was the first to notice a business with a Yahoo review as opposed to the Yelp reviews we normally see.

Here is a screenshot of the business he noticed it on.

yahoo local yahoo reviewsIt very clearly states Yahoo reviews, with nary a mention of Yelp anywhere.

But hours later, when I re-did the search, the business had flipped back to Yelp reviews.

Here is another local search, and this one actually shows a mix of both Yahoo and Yelp reviews.

There doesn’t seem to be a rhyme or reason why some show Yahoo and others show Yelp, especially with the Barbara Oliver listing that flipped from Yelp to Yahoo and back again.

We do know that Marissa Mayer is putting a lot of resources into Yahoo search, so it is conceivable that they are wanting to move away from a Yelp partnership in favor of keeping it inhouse.  But the problem with potentially outdated reviews – and not very many of them – could be very problematic.

One of many smart moves Marissa has made to rebuild Yahoo as a leader in it’s industry. Dumping Bing search and removing alliances with Yelp improve the quality and autonomy of Yahoo.

Hi Jennifer. I think I have the answer to your article.

Yahoo can only show Yelp reviews if they have enough NAP accuracy to match to the Yelp page. Any Yahoo listing that cannot match to Yelp keeps the old reviews. Hence why most have Yelp reviews but the inaccurate NAP listings still have old Yahoo.

When you saw the Yahoo listing have Yahoo reviews one day and Yelp reviews another, it’s because it matched to the Yelp listing. Now if it reverted from Yelp reviews to Yahoo reviews, that would be strange.

I’ve been observing this trend for a while now, staring at millions of reviews daily for some of the largest chains in the country through the Chatmeter platform. I think it’s safe to assume… Yahoo is not only done with reviews but may even be outsourcing their entire local strategy soon (like they do in Canada to YP).

    Thanks,
    Lee Auerbach

My Yahoo local business is pulling reviews from TripAdvisor, but I would prefer Yahoo Local use my Yelp reviews (a lot more). Do you know of a way to contact Yahoo Local to switch the review source from Tripadvisor to Yelp? I’m even paying for Abaco Small Business which manages Yahoo Local now, but cannot find a way to edit the review source.
