How to Disavow All Blogspot Links Including TLDs

disavow blogspotChances are if you have ever done a disavow file, you have come across multiple blogspot.com links, as well as links coming from the various international versions of Blogspot, each of which is hosted on its own country-specific TLD.   And it can be a chore to disavow them all.

Marie Haynes shared an incredibly useful tip for those who want to disavow all Blogspot URLs.  Just simply disavow the entire Blogspot.com domain by using:

domain:blogspot.com

This will disavow everything, including all the TLDs such as blogspot.ca and blogspot.co.uk.  And yes, this works for all subdomains on all blogspot URLs.

Disavowing all links from Blogspot means that it will also speed up the processing of the disavow file, something that is important for many people, especially those who are penalized by Google.

Want to disavow all links from Blogspot? Just add "domain:http://t.co/WIo6LUuG5P". No need to disavow all TLDs. pic.twitter.com/BZDJDxsFcG

Someone asked Zineb Ait Bahajji, a Google Trends Analyst, for confirmation that this works, and she replied yes, as it is the canonical domain.

@RaphSEO oui… car la version canonical est la .com

— Zineb Ait (@Missiz_Z) July 30, 2015

For those not proficient in French, she is saying “Yes… because the canonical version is the .com.”

She does also say that if there are links showing up in Google Search Console, you should still disavow the different versions individually as well.

@RaphSEO Exact!

— Zineb Ait (@Missiz_Z) July 30, 2015

Haynes also pointed out that sometimes there are legitimate links coming from blogspot URLs.  But when someone has been using blogspot to spam for links, it can be easier just to disavow the whole domain rather than having to individually disavow subdomain by subdomain.

@Skitzzo If you've spammed the heck out of your site via blogspot microsites or paid links and can't keep on top of all of the bad links.

— Marie Haynes (@Marie_Haynes) July 29, 2015

So if you have an issue where you have many poor quality or spam links from Blogspot, this will make the disavow process much easier.

    Thanks for writing this Jen.

I realized that when I first tweeted this, my intention actually was not to talk about disavowing all of Blogspot. Rather, I was thinking about situations where you might have

    domain:subdomain.blogspot.com

    disavowed, and also,

    domain:subdomain.blogspot.ca
    domain:subdomain.blogspot.co.uk

    and so on.

In that case, just disavowing subdomain.blogspot.com is enough as it is the canonical version.

However, can you disavow ALL of blogspot by writing domain:blogspot.com? The answer is yes. In this video, at approx 41:20, (https://youtu.be/oNFeEzG36FM?t=41m20s) John Mueller says the following:

“If you disavow Blogspot.com, then you’ve disavowed pretty much all the blogs that are hosted on blogspot.com that are indexed as blogspot.com”

    Hope that clarifies things.

Interesting stuff… agree with the canonical stuff and its a great tip Marie!

As to disavowing the whole of blogspot I have had advice to the contrary for large sub domain driven sites in the past (from Google directly) but they may have changed that and the video does seem clear…

However it would have to be a fairly serious situation to kill the whole property with no hope of ever getting any value from any link on blogspot ….

I have seen people post about the difficulties of disavowing domains. But, not all Blogspot websites are harmful. When you banish an entire domain, you are missing out on opinion leaders and high ranking pages that just so happen to be on Blogspot. They may be few and far between when linking to your website, but there are still quite a few that are there. Maybe this will encourage more bloggers to get their own web domain.

This was more a recommendation for those who have spammed blogspot blogs previously, and it is sometimes easier to disavow the whole shebang rather than go through the tedious process of finding those few golden links in a field of spam 🙂

Is it worth employing someone to carry out the link outreach, or
    would you do it in-house?
Added a post on my Facebook, hope thats okay!

It really depends. But if you employ someone, do your research. You don’t want to find out later the person you hired spammed for links… that will cause issues trying to clean that up later.
