Google Confirms Penguin Update By End of Year

penguin 2015Good news for those anxiously awaiting a Google Penguin update, Google confirms we will be seeing the update before the end of the year.

Gary Illyes from Google was asked about whether we we would be seeing a Penguin update this year or not, and he surprisingly did confirm that yes, we will see it in 2015.

@Andrew_Isidoro yes

— Gary Illyes (@methode) October 28, 2015

It has now been over a year since we saw the last Penguin update, with the last refresh happening in October 2014.  So finally having a confirmation that it will be happening within the next two months or so is good.  John Mueller had previously said it was likely it would be this year, but that he had no confirmation on that.

This upcoming Penguin will be the switch over to the real time Penguin, so webmasters will no longer have to wait a year or more to see a new update or refresh.

I suspect we will see it happen sooner within the two month time frame than later.  Google traditionally tends to not make changes that will have a huge impact on the search results in the midst of holiday shopping.  But with the real time Penguin, and the fact webmasters can recover much more quickly, might result in having it happen closer to Christmas than we usually see changes.

But this is great news for those stuck with Penguin…. it is on the way soon!

I reckon he just said yes so no one is tempted to spam before Xmas shopping rush.

Looking forward (sort of) to it… Small window not to disrupt holiday shopping issues though – Dec. 28 to Dec. 31? 😉

So Jenn, are you implying that those sites previously hit by Penguin have a chance to recover ?

We had our manual penalty revoked about 2 years ago but the site is no where near its former glory. I have since been on a crusade to remove spammy links and have been quite successful in this respect.

Obviously some links simply cannot be removed so hopefully the disavow file will be taken into account.

    Great article

    Cheers

    Michael

Provided the issue IS Penguin, and it has been completely cleaned up, you could see a recovery. Of course, there are so many pieces to the algo puzzle that it could be completely different issues too. Also remember there is a delay with the disavow URLs, as Google needs to recrawl each of those URLs for it to “count”.

We also were hit with a manual penalty over 2.5 years ago and recovered from it about 2 months after that. Our PR5 website recovered, but it still had some kind of internal penalty because even though it did had some bad links which were removed or disavowed, it had 1000s of authority and organic links from a lot of good websites as we have extremely good content which people link to.

Unfortunately website recovered to page 6, and we tried to work with seos, but they never even got us to page 2. They all said, it must be the penalty because they were ranking other website to page #1 with no issues and our site would just not move for months, no matter what on or off page we did.
As a test we started a new website and without 1 month it was already higher in search, with less tan 20 links!!! 2 months later, it got to page 1.

    So Internal penalties are real!

Certainly, I really hope there’s some kind of timeline at google that eventually expires. Nobody seems to be able to explain or confirm the internal penalty that is not visible, but it’s real.
I wish google would provide more information on it.
I mean, how long do sites have to suffer penalties?
    Forever?
    5 years?
    10 years?
If anyone knows it, we would love to hear it.
