greg youtube dummies book An interviewer for the Content Marketing Conference blog recently asked me, “Anything else you’d like our readers to know?” And I replied, “Yes, don’t rush out and buy my book, YouTube and Video Marketing. It was published in November 2011. At the time, my second edition legitimately claimed to be ‘Fully updated with new information, including the latest changes to YouTube!’ But today, the only chapter that isn’t out-of-date is Chapter 1: A Short History of YouTube. “

Now, telling readers what they shouldn’t do can help them to avoid the pitfalls, but it doesn’t help them to seize the opportunities. So, if you want to read a book that is fully updated with new information, including the latest changes to YouTube, then I recommend that you read YouTube Channels for Dummies, co-authored by Rob Ciampa, the CMO of Pixability, and Theresa Moore, the company’s VP of Professional Services.

YouTube Channels for Dummies

The release of the book coincides with an inflection point in the online video market, as marketers increasingly shift media budgets to online video.

“From established global brands to young independent creators, YouTube offers an enormous opportunity to share stories through video, create a community, and even build a business,” Jim Habig, YouTube Marketing Manager, said in a press release announcing the availability of the book.

Published by Wiley, YouTube Channels for Dummies is divided into sections that encompass all elements needed to build a successful YouTube strategy:

  • Getting started with YouTube channels. Everything you need to know to get started on YouTube and build your channel.
  • Making good videos and not making bad videos. Insight into what makes a good video, effective channel planning, and the tools needed to capture, edit and upload your video.
  • Growing and knowing your audience. How to build your audience, understand YouTube analytics, monetize your content, and leverage Multi-Channel Networks.
  • YouTube channels are serious business. How and why businesses use YouTube, and how to acquire and activate an audience for your brand.
  • The part of tens. Ten key steps to improving your YouTube search results and 10 things to know about copyright.

Beginning with the basics, the book shows you how to establish a channel, join a partner program, and develop a content plan. Next, you’ll gain insight into how to create content that builds a channel, enhance the viral nature of a video, encourage subscriptions, and earn repeat views. If that weren’t enough, you’ll go on even further to learn how to get the word out about your channel and discover ways to enhance your potential profits. That’s a lot of info—but it’s easily digestible and simple to put into practice when it’s provided in the accessible and trusted For Dummies format.

YouTube is the third most-visited website on the Internet, making it prime real estate for anyone seeking customers, celebrity, or education. If you want to harness this irresistible platform and reach a global platform, YouTube Channels for Dummies makes it easy. In no time, you’ll have the know-how to create a YouTube channel with regular subscribers who watch, re-watch, and share your videos.

In the press release, Ciampa said, “With extensive experience in the online video business – both personally and at Pixability – this book builds upon a foundation of deep video marketing expertise, insight into brand and consumer trends in online video, and experience helping global brands leverage YouTube as a revenue generator.” He added, “The book covers everything an individual, an MCN, brand or agency needs to know to build a measurable YouTube strategy.”

In the release, Moore said, “From channel creation to audience discovery, advertising, monetization and analytics, we left no stone unturned.” She added, “We distilled years of professional experience on YouTube into a comprehensive resource that addresses every element required to build a business on YouTube.”

Now, most readers of The SEM Post will probably purchase YouTube Channels for Dummies online on Amazon (not affiliate link), but the book is also available from all major booksellers in both print and e-book formats. I realize this going offline may seem retro to grizzled veterans of the search marketing industry. Bur, if you want to find the local book stores near you, you can always use Google.

I would be lying if I said I didn’t have both versions of Greg’s book. Greg: thank you for your YouTube advocacy and being an inspiration to the online video community. If I didn’t dedicate “YouTube Channels for Dummies” to my wife, I would have dedicated it to you.

Thanks. My wife told me that if I was ever tempted to write a third edition of my book, then I’d need to find a second wife. Writing takes a lot of time away from family, friends, and the Boston Red Sox.
